Who Am I?
I am Thom McCarthy. My life has been spent in many endeavors and passions. I have worked in a vast array of industries including technologies, science, education, finance and accounting, consulting, writing, and business. This breadth of experience allows me to work with people in all departments and divisions, evaluate the root causes of problems and opportunities, and cooperatively reach solutions to create the greatest value to the organization as a whole.
What Do I Do?
My career has evolved into IT Project Management, IT Program Management, and Consulting. I have led teams from three to seventy-five, with budgets into the millions of dollars. Along with delivering projects exceeding expectations of clients and customers, I have improved SDLC methodologies, created and implemented PMOs, and revived projects that have been stalled due to technical and procedural problems. My goal has always been consistent: constant improvement to provide value through state-of-the-art technologies.
How Do I Do What I Do?
The key to success is to keep things as simple as possible.
We work with people from all teams and organization to understand the goals, issues and organization. The potential roadblocks are identified, diagnosed, then core issues are analyzed to provide solutions that best benefit the projects and program. Responsibilities and resources are coordinated by consulting with all teams to build commitment throughout the organization. Final reviews confirm that their opinions and concerns have been considered, building greater trust and commitment to ensure the successful execution of the project.
Once the project is kicked off, the organizational structure flattens. The primary role of project manager moves to support and tracking. Working to provide every resource that is needed to successfully complete their tasks becomes the most important function, whether it is conducting Steering Committee Meetings or picking up pizza. Tracking progress through the project plan, risk and issues logs, or meetings will direct where the efforts need to be delivered. Transparency and open communication allow for the early identification and resolution of any issue that may arise.
My belief is by focusing on the success of the team members during and after the project, while respecting their skills and opinions, people perform better and create greater value for the organization.
Why Do I Do What I Do?
Increasing value by increasing productivity are goals I have for every project. Employees and end-users share in the pride of being able to do a better job. Providing the pathway to elicit what is needed, building the systems, and leading the training and coaching to ease the transition for a mutually beneficial solution provide that pathway. I enjoy sharing in the team’s pride and satisfaction in these accomplishments.
